Seven killed as rain and flash floods cause widespread damage in Balochistan

QUETTA / DERA MURAD JAMALI: Heavy rain and flash flooding have caused extensive damage across several districts of Balochistan, leaving seven people dead and four others injured, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

The PDMA said the worst-hit areas included Harnai, Kohlu, Turbat, Jaffarabad, Loralai, Kachhi, Nasirabad, Jhal Magsi, Dera Bugti, Sibi and Bolan, where homes, livestock and crops were affected by the downpours and floodwater.

According to the authority’s report, an embankment breach in Balanari in Kachhi destroyed more than 100 houses, killed over 50 animals and inundated around 400 acres of farmland. In Harnai and Qila Abdullah, nearly 100 houses were reported damaged, while flood surges blocked the Gandawah-Notal road in Jhal Magsi.

The deaths were reported from multiple districts. The PDMA said two people were killed in lightning strikes in Loralai and Kachhi. One person died in Kohlu after a roof collapsed, while another was killed in Loralai in a wall collapse. A child drowned in Jaffarabad, and two people were swept away in Kech.

Rainwater and flooding also damaged transport links in different parts of the province. Sections of the Harnai-Quetta and Quetta-Sanjawi national highways were washed away, and several internal roads were also affected. Flash floods in streams in Harnai and Chaman disrupted routine life in those areas.

Rescue and relief operations underway

The PDMA said emergency teams, working with district administrations, were carrying out rescue and relief work in affected areas.

In Qila Abdullah, a mini-coach carrying 15 women and children became stranded in floodwater but was rescued under the supervision of the deputy commissioner with assistance from the PDMA.

Rescue activity was also continuing in Goth Taj Habib and Goth Balochani in Kachhi, where work on repairing embankments was in progress.

Thousands of livestock had died, while standing crops including wheat, chickpeas and mustard were destroyed in the affected districts.

Roads linking Notal, Gandawah, Bolan, Yarokazoi and Jhal Magsi had been cut off, isolating local communities and suspending traffic between Sindh and Balochistan.
