Quetta: Recent rainfall and hailstorms across several parts of Balochistan have led to a marked improvement in groundwater levels and replenished a number of small and large dams, bringing relief to farmers and orchard owners in the province.
According to reports from different areas, the latest spell of precipitation has helped ease conditions in a province that had been facing prolonged drought and serious water shortages for the past few years. Experts described the rains as a major blessing for Balochistan, saying the development could help reduce drought-related risks and improve agricultural conditions if the wet spell continues in the coming days.
The rainfall was reported in Quetta, Pishin, Qila Abdullah, Zhob, Ziarat, Qila Saifullah, Loralai, Musakhel, Khuzdar, Mastung, Nushki, Chagai, Duki, Harnai, Makran Division, Nasirabad Division and other areas. The rains have not only improved groundwater recharge but have also started filling dams in different parts of the province.
Reports from rural districts indicated that water levels have risen in wells, karez systems, which are traditional underground water channels, and tube wells. This has encouraged growers who had been struggling with water scarcity and uncertain farming conditions.
Farmers said the improved water availability has renewed expectations for a stronger harvest this year. They are hopeful that wheat, vegetables, fruits and other crops will benefit from the recent weather. Orchard owners also believe the rains will support fruit production, particularly for apple, grape, apricot and peach orchards.
The impact is also expected to extend beyond crop farming. Fresh grass has started emerging in grazing lands, a development seen as important relief for livestock breeders who depend on pasture conditions for their animals.
Experts said the current rainfall spell could play a significant role in lowering the threat of drought in Balochistan. They added that continued rainfall over the next several days could further improve the agricultural outlook in most parts of the province.
Residents in different localities also welcomed the rains, expressing hope that the precipitation would help ease the water crisis and provide support to the province’s agriculture-based economy.
Relief after years of water stress
The latest improvement comes after several years in which Balochistan faced acute water shortages and drought conditions. In that context, the rise in groundwater, the filling of dams and the recovery of water sources in rural areas have been seen as an important development for both farming communities and people dependent on local water systems.
With water returning to wells, karez channels and tube wells, and with orchards, crops and grazing lands showing signs of recovery, the recent rains have brought renewed optimism to many parts of the province.
