Karachi police suspend traffic enforcement drive due to expected rain

KARACHI: Karachi Police have temporarily halted their ongoing enforcement campaign against traffic violations and the use of non-approved vehicle number plates in view of expected rainfall in the city.

The decision was taken on the directives of Additional IG Karachi Javed Alam Odho to facilitate residents during the anticipated rainy spell. The suspension applies to the campaign that had been launched against motorists using private, fancy and non-government-approved number plates.

The operation had also targeted road users for failing to wear seat belts and helmets. However, the drive has now been put on hold for the time being to avoid causing inconvenience to the public during the expected wet weather conditions.

Campaign paused on police chief’s directives

The temporary suspension was ordered as rain is expected in Karachi, with police authorities deciding that continuing the crackdown during such conditions could create difficulties for citizens.

A spokesperson for Karachi Police asked members of the public to make use of this pause to bring their vehicles into compliance with the law. The spokesperson urged citizens to regularise their vehicle number plates and ensure that only government-approved plates are installed.

Police also advised motorists to use this period to address any outstanding issues related to compliance with traffic rules so that they can avoid action when the campaign is restarted.

Citizens advised to ensure compliance before drive resumes

As outlined in the report, the enforcement campaign had focused on multiple categories of violations, including the use of fancy number plates and the absence of approved registration plates. It also covered safety-related offences such as not wearing helmets and seat belts.

With the operation now temporarily suspended, Karachi Police have signalled that the pause is intended only for the duration of the expected rainy conditions. Citizens have been encouraged to use the time to ensure their vehicles meet legal requirements before the campaign resumes.

The spokesperson for Karachi Police urged citizens to utilise this time to regularise their vehicle number plates and ensure the use of only government-approved plates, so they can avoid legal action once the campaign resumes.
