'Act like Jews': Former FBR chief tells Urdu speakers how to regain influence

Former Chairman Federal Board of Revenue Syed Shabbar Zaidi has sparked discussion after saying that Urdu-speaking communities in Pakistan should focus on education and wealth creation instead of politics if they want to regain influence.

Speaking about the Muhajir community — many of whom migrated from India to Pakistan — Zaidi suggested adopting what he described as a mindset similar to that of the Jewish community when it comes to building influence.

“They should be educated and rich, power will come to you automatically,” he said, arguing that economic strength and intellectual development are more effective routes to influence than traditional political struggles.

Zaidi also referred to the historical role of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), saying the party had once helped secure both education and economic strength for the community. However, he claimed that these advantages were later taken away as part of what he described as a “conspiracy.”

According to Zaidi, engaging in local-level politics or competing for positions such as councilor seats is not the most effective strategy. Instead, he stressed that prioritising education and financial stability would naturally lead to power and influence over time.

His remarks have triggered debate online, with some agreeing with the emphasis on long-term development, while others questioned the comparison and its broader implications.
