ISLAMABAD: All five suspects involved in the killing of businessman Aamir Awan during a robbery at his Islamabad farmhouse have been arrested within 24 hours, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said on Tuesday.
Awan was shot by armed robbers on March 29 and succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Addressing a press conference alongside Islamabad Inspector General of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, Chaudhry identified the gang as the Mansoor Khan group, popularly known as the Bulletproof Jacket Wala Gang. He noted that the gang had links to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and included two Afghan nationals among its members, operating in areas where even police presence was limited.
“The arrests were carried out across a wide area, spanning from Karachi to Khyber,” Chaudhry said, while highlighting a 63% reduction in major crimes in Islamabad compared to last year.
Acknowledging challenges such as limited forensic facilities and incomplete Safe City infrastructure, the minister said the issues were being addressed as part of efforts to transform Islamabad into Pakistan’s first Smart City.
IG Rizvi briefed the media on the investigative process, explaining that the case was solved using modern technology, including artificial intelligence, geofencing across six locations, analysis of 137 call records, and questioning of 93 individuals. Raids were conducted in Charsadda and Mardan in KP, as well as in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, resulting in the arrest of the gang’s ringleader in Charsadda.
The police chief described the gang as highly organised, noting that the robbers had disarmed Awan’s guard and seized a rifle and mobile phones during the attack.
The swift action by law enforcement underscores Islamabad police’s growing efficiency in tackling violent crime and improving public safety.
