Agencies foil alleged Indian 'False Flag' plot in IIOJK aimed at escalating border tensions

ISLAMABAD: Intelligence agencies have uncovered an alleged Indian plan to stage a false flag operation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) using Pakistani prisoners to heighten tensions along the border, security sources said on Monday.

According to officials familiar with the development, the plan surfaced after intelligence agencies intercepted and decoded sensitive communications indicating preparations for a staged incident. The sources said the alleged strategy involved releasing selected Pakistani prisoners and moving them towards sensitive border areas in IIOJK, where they could be used to orchestrate an incident designed to appear as a cross-border infiltration or attack.

The objective of the purported operation, sources added, was to attribute the incident to Pakistan and create a pretext for escalation along the eastern border. Such a move, they warned, could be aimed at diverting attention from internal challenges while justifying military posturing or action against Pakistan.

Security officials expressed concern that the plan, if executed, could lead to a dangerous escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. They noted that any such provocation could force Pakistan’s armed forces to respond, raising the risk of a wider confrontation in an already volatile region.

The development comes amid persistently strained ties between Pakistan and India, particularly over the Kashmir dispute. Relations sharply deteriorated last year following an attack on tourists in IIOJK’s Pahalgam, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistan. Islamabad rejected the assertion, calling for a transparent and neutral international investigation into the incident.

In the aftermath, India carried out missile strikes inside Pakistani territory, resulting in the martyrdom of civilians and security personnel. Pakistan responded with retaliatory action, targeting multiple Indian military installations and downing several fighter jets and drones. Officials had claimed that key defence assets were also neutralised during the exchange.

The confrontation marked one of the most serious escalations in recent years between the two countries and raised alarm in the international community over the risk of a broader conflict. Diplomatic efforts eventually led to a ceasefire agreement on May 10, brokered by the United States, bringing a temporary halt to hostilities.

Security analysts warn that any attempt to stage a false flag operation could undermine fragile peace efforts and further destabilise South Asia. They stress that such actions not only heighten mistrust but also increase the likelihood of miscalculation between the two sides.

Officials emphasised that Pakistan remains vigilant and prepared to respond to any provocation, while continuing to advocate for dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes. They also urged the international community to take note of the situation and play a constructive role in preventing further escalation in the region.
