LAHORE: Police have uncovered a suspected network involved in the illegal sale of newborn babies after raiding a private clinic in the suburban area of Sheikham near Sarai Mughal.
Acting on a tip-off, officers from Saddar Sarai Mughal conducted a raid at the facility, where they gathered crucial evidence and registered a case against those allegedly involved. The discovery has alarmed local residents, raising serious concerns about the presence of such inhumane activities in the area.
According to initial findings, the clinic had been operating unlawfully for nearly a year. Staff members were reportedly posing as trained doctors and nurses while handling childbirth cases, particularly involving unmarried women. Investigators believe that babies born at the clinic were secretly sold.
The First Information Report states that after the birth of a child to an unmarried woman, the accused — identified as Rabia, Waqas, and Waris — allegedly sold the newborn for Rs. 48,000 to Zafar Iqbal and Shamim Bibi.
Police also indicated that an unidentified driver played a role in the transaction, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest him.
Station House Officer Amir Aslam confirmed that a formal case has been registered and investigations are ongoing. During the operation, three suspects, including a woman, were taken into custody. The arrested individuals have been identified as Sarwar, Zafar Iqbal, and Rabia.
Authorities have continued conducting raids to apprehend other individuals believed to be part of the network. Officials noted that the clinic had been functioning in the area for about a year, suggesting that the illegal trade may have been ongoing for a significant period.
Following the raid, teams from the Health Department in Pattoki inspected the premises. Deputy District Health Officer Dr. Shahzaib ordered the immediate sealing of the clinic.
Authorities have confirmed that the case has been referred to the Drug Court for further legal proceedings.
