Wang Yi warns of nuclear risks, urges global unity in talks with Rafael Grossi

BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday called for nuclear restraint and stronger multilateral cooperation during a meeting with Rafael Mariano Grossi, warning that escalating conflicts could pose grave risks to global peace and security.

During the meeting, Wang cautioned that the post-World War II international order is facing unprecedented strain, with the United Nations-centered system experiencing a growing crisis of trust. He criticised what he described as the erosion of global norms, warning that unilateral actions and coercive policies risk pushing the world towards a “law of the jungle” scenario.

Highlighting the dangers posed by ongoing conflicts, Wang stressed that any targeting of nuclear facilities would have catastrophic consequences, potentially triggering humanitarian disasters and destabilising entire regions. He emphasised that an immediate ceasefire and a return to dialogue were essential to address the root causes of conflicts.

“History has repeatedly shown that military aggression is never the right path,” Wang said, reiterating China’s position that diplomacy and negotiations remain the only viable solutions.

He reaffirmed China’s commitment to multilateralism, pledging support for the authority of the UN Charter and the strengthening of global governance mechanisms. Wang also underscored the critical role of the International Atomic Energy Agency in maintaining nuclear safety and non-proliferation, expressing Beijing’s willingness to deepen cooperation with the agency.

Grossi, in his remarks, acknowledged the growing uncertainty facing the international community and stressed the need for collective action to address global challenges. He praised China’s global initiatives and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to working closely with Beijing on key issues, including nuclear safety, peaceful energy use, and non-proliferation efforts.

The meeting highlighted the urgency of coordinated international action as geopolitical tensions rise, with both sides agreeing on the importance of safeguarding nuclear security and maintaining a stable global order.
