ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) regional office in Rawalpindi has carried out an artificial intelligence-based audit of cooperative housing societies, uncovering significant shortcomings in prevailing audit practices.
The NAB Rawalpindi office organised a consultative session bringing together the managements of cooperative housing societies, officials from the cooperative housing department, and relevant auditors. The purpose of the meeting was to undertake a comprehensive review of audit reports pertaining to selected housing societies.
AI-enabled system used for first time
In what has been described as a significant and innovative step towards promoting transparency and accountability in the housing sector, NAB employed its AI-enabled system for the first time to carry out a digital and analytical examination of audit reports of cooperative housing societies.
The use of artificial intelligence allowed the bureau to identify various financial, administrative, and legal irregularities and deficiencies within the reviewed audit reports. The AI-driven analysis revealed that several audit reports lacked the necessary depth and failed to comprehensively examine critical aspects of the housing societies' operations.
Key findings of the review
According to the findings, it was observed that many of the audit reports were deficient in their scope and did not adequately cover important areas that warranted thorough scrutiny. The review highlighted that the existing audit practices employed in the cooperative housing sector fell short of the standards required for ensuring proper financial oversight and regulatory compliance.
The consultative session marked a broader effort by NAB to leverage modern technology in its accountability drive, particularly within the cooperative housing sector, which has long been a source of complaints regarding financial mismanagement and irregularities affecting thousands of members and investors across the country.
The initiative reflects NAB's evolving approach to deploying digital tools and AI-powered analytics to detect discrepancies that may go unnoticed in conventional manual audits. By bringing together key stakeholders including housing society managements, the cooperative housing department, and auditors, the bureau aimed to address the identified gaps and push for more rigorous and transparent audit mechanisms going forward.
The move is expected to have implications for how cooperative housing societies conduct their financial reporting and auditing processes, with NAB signalling its intent to use technology-driven methods to hold the sector to higher standards of accountability.
