Lahore-bound PIA flight from Fujairah diverts to Karachi due to cabin pressure issue

KARACHI: A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight travelling from Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates to Lahore was diverted to Karachi on Tuesday night after developing a technical fault mid-flight, the airline confirmed.

PIA said in a post on X that flight PK178 had landed safely in Karachi after experiencing a cabin pressure-related snag during the journey.

"PIA flight 178 (Fujerah-Lahore) is safe and sound and has landed at Karachi. During the flight, it developed a cabin pressure-related snag, and as per procedure, it reduced altitude to 10,000 feet."

The airline stated that its engineering team was working to resolve the issue and that the aircraft would resume its journey to Lahore once the fault was rectified.

"Our team of engineers are working diligently to remove the fault, and the flight will be dispatched to its original destination, i.e., Lahore, shortly."

Middle East conflict disrupts global aviation

The diversion comes at a time when the global aviation industry is facing significant disruption due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The war, which began with the United States and Israel launching attacks on Iran on February 28, has caused widespread upheaval in international air travel.

Key Middle Eastern aviation hubs have been forced to shut down, leading to the mass cancellation of flights and leaving tens of thousands of passengers stranded. Hubs in Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi have been among those affected by the closures.

The disruption has also triggered a sharp surge in airfares as jet fuel prices have skyrocketed amid the escalating regional tensions. The closure of these major transit points has sent ripple effects across the global aviation sector, compounding challenges for airlines and travellers alike.

PIA, like other carriers operating in the region, has been navigating these difficult conditions as it continues to serve routes connecting Pakistan with the Middle East and beyond. The diversion of PK178 to Karachi, however, was attributed specifically to the technical snag rather than the broader regional situation.
