Gamers push back as Nvidia unveils AI-powered graphics boost at developer conference

SAN JOSE: Chip giant Nvidia's announcement of a new AI-driven graphics technology at its annual developer conference in San Jose, California on Monday has drawn sharp criticism from gamers, even as the company hailed it as a groundbreaking moment for the gaming industry.

Nvidia, which has risen from being a creator of graphics chips for gaming to becoming the world's most valuable company on the back of its crucial role in powering generative artificial intelligence, unveiled the next generation of its Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology. The company described the launch as a "GPT moment" for gaming.

What is DLSS 5?

DLSS technology uses artificial intelligence to improve graphics in real time. Originally designed to upscale images to higher resolutions, current versions of the technology enhance the quality and realism of visual elements such as reflections, shadows and highlights.

The upcoming DLSS 5 iteration is set to recycle the same AI technology that has driven Nvidia's dominance in the generative AI space back into the gaming arena.

"DLSS 5 empowers game developers to deliver a new level of photoreal computer graphics previously only achieved in Hollywood visual effects."
