UN observes International Day to Combat Islamophobia amid rising global tensions
The UN marked the International Day to Combat Islamophobia amid rising anti-Muslim sentiment, with Pakistan highlighting intensifying global hostility and increased online hate speech.

NEW YORK: The United Nations marked the International Day to Combat Islamophobia this year against a backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East and increasing reports of anti-Muslim sentiment worldwide.
Pakistan, which played a leading role in the adoption of the 2022 UN resolution that established March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, emphasized that hostility towards Muslims is intensifying globally. According to Pakistani officials, political rhetoric, digital platforms, and mainstream discourse are all contributing to the amplification of anti-Muslim hatred.
The annual observance on March 15 commemorates the victims of the Christchurch mosque attacks, in which 51 worshippers lost their lives. The day was designated by the United Nations to honor those affected by Islamophobic violence and to raise awareness about the growing issue.
This year’s commemoration comes amid heightened instability in the Middle East, particularly due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Analysts have noted that these developments have led to a renewed surge in Islamophobic narratives across various regions.
Reports have highlighted a significant increase in online hate speech and dehumanizing rhetoric directed at Muslims. This trend is contributing to a broader climate of intolerance, prompting the UN and its member states to call for greater attention and action to address the problem.
The United Nations and allied nations have reiterated the importance of combating all forms of religious discrimination and promoting mutual respect. The observance of the International Day to Combat Islamophobia serves as a reminder of the need for continued vigilance and international cooperation to counter rising hate and discrimination against Muslims worldwide.
