IHC directs authorities to provide relief for students in M-tag policy

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued directives to offer relief to students affected by the M-tag policy implemented on the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway (M-2), according to an official court order.

During a hearing on Monday, the IHC addressed petitions filed by students who raised concerns regarding the mandatory M-tag requirement for motorway travel. The petitioners argued that the policy, which requires all vehicles to have an M-tag for access to the M-2, was causing difficulties for students who frequently travel between cities for educational purposes.

Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan presided over the case and instructed the relevant authorities to ensure that students are not subjected to unnecessary hardship due to the policy. The court emphasized the need for a mechanism that would allow students to travel without facing obstacles or penalties related to the M-tag system.

The court order stated, "Students should be provided relief under the M-tag policy." The IHC further directed the authorities to submit a compliance report on the implementation of these instructions at the next hearing.

The M-tag system, introduced to facilitate electronic toll collection on the motorway, has drawn criticism from various quarters, particularly students and daily commuters. Petitioners maintained that the policy did not account for the unique circumstances faced by students, many of whom rely on inter-city travel for their education.

Justice Khan underscored the importance of balancing security and administrative measures with the needs of the public, especially students. The court's intervention aims to ensure that educational pursuits are not hindered by administrative policies.

The case has been adjourned, with the court seeking a detailed report on the steps taken to provide relief to students under the M-tag policy.
