Eight women killed, 80 injured in Rahim Yar Khan shop roof collapse during BISP cash distribution

RAHIM YAR KHAN: At least eight women lost their lives and 80 others sustained injuries when the roof of a shop collapsed during the distribution of financial aid under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) in Rahim Yar Khan on Monday.

According to details, the incident took place as a large number of women had gathered at a private retailer's outlet to collect Eid welfare payments under the BISP initiative. The shop, which was being used as a distribution point, saw a heavy turnout of women waiting in queues for their turn to receive financial assistance.

Police have registered a case against five individuals, including the private retailer’s device agent, in connection with the incident. Authorities stated that the collapse occurred due to the excessive crowd and the structural weakness of the shop's roof, which was unable to withstand the pressure.

Rescue teams and local administration officials responded promptly, shifting the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. Medical staff confirmed that several of the injured were in critical condition.

Officials said that the distribution of BISP payments at private outlets is a common practice, especially ahead of major festivals such as Eid, to facilitate beneficiaries. However, the large turnout at the Rahim Yar Khan outlet led to overcrowding, which contributed to the tragedy.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, and efforts are underway to provide support to the families of the deceased and injured.
