Amnesty International accuses US of violating humanitarian law in deadly Minab school airstrike

Tehran: Amnesty International has accused the United States of violating international humanitarian law in an airstrike that struck a school in Minab, Iran, resulting in the deaths of approximately 168 people, most of whom were children.

According to an in-depth investigation by the rights organization, the attack targeted the school building directly, along with 12 other structures located in a nearby Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) compound. Amnesty International stated that the use of guided weapons in the strike indicated that US forces did not take all feasible precautions to prevent civilian casualties.

The report raised concerns that the school, which was previously part of the IRGC compound, may have been targeted based on outdated intelligence. Amnesty International emphasized the obligation of US forces to ensure that all available measures are taken to avoid harm to civilians during military operations.

“The fact that the school building was directly targeted and was previously part of the IRGC compound raises concerns that US forces may have relied on outdated intelligence and failed in their obligation to do ever,”

the organization stated in its report.

Amnesty International has called for a transparent and thorough investigation into the incident, urging authorities to ensure accountability for those responsible. The organization highlighted that the deliberate targeting of the school and the resulting high civilian death toll represent a serious breach of international humanitarian law.

The report also noted that the strike not only caused significant loss of life but also raised broader concerns about the conduct of military operations and the protection of civilians in conflict zones. Amnesty International reiterated its demand for accountability and for measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
