China's special envoy meets Kuwait FM, urges ceasefire and respect for Gulf sovereignty

KUWAIT CITY: China’s special envoy on Middle East affairs, Zhai Jun, met Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in Kuwait City on Sunday to discuss the escalating regional crisis and efforts to restore stability.

During the meeting, Sheikh Jarrah emphasised that Kuwait was not a party to the ongoing conflict and remained committed to resolving disputes through peaceful means and diplomatic dialogue.

He said Iran should immediately halt attacks on Kuwait and other Gulf neighbours, ensure the safety and uninterrupted flow of international waterways and avoid actions that could further disrupt global energy supplies.

The Kuwaiti foreign minister also expressed appreciation for China’s position on the conflict and its efforts to promote peace in the region. He welcomed Beijing’s mediation efforts and said Kuwait was willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China to help restore peace and stability.

Zhai Jun said the regional situation remained highly volatile and that Gulf states, including Kuwait, had been significantly affected by the conflict.

He stressed that the military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran were launched without authorisation from the United Nations Security Council, calling the action a violation of international law that China firmly opposed.

At the same time, the Chinese envoy condemned indiscriminate attacks on civilians and non-military targets, emphasising that the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Gulf countries must be respected.

He added that energy and economic infrastructure should not be targeted and that the safety of international maritime routes must be safeguarded.

Zhai said the immediate priority for the international community was to halt the fighting and bring the conflict to an end, urging all parties involved to cease military operations and prevent further escalation.

He also praised Kuwait’s restrained and measured approach to the crisis and said China was willing to work closely with Kuwait to play a constructive role in easing tensions and promoting dialogue in the region.
