Islamabad’s iconic Monal returns with stunning rooftop restaurant at IMARAT Downtown

After months of anticipation and nostalgia, Monal Islamabad has officially reopened in a brand-new location, bringing back one of the capital’s most beloved dining experiences.

The restaurant has now opened its doors on the rooftop of Mall of IMARAT at IMARAT Downtown, offering sweeping views of the city that many residents say rival the famous vistas of its former hilltop location.

Construction on the new site began in September 2024, a little over a year after plans for relocation were announced. The grand opening was initially expected in January 2025, but the launch took longer than anticipated. On March 13, Luqman Ali Afzal, chairman of the Monal Group, confirmed that the restaurant is officially open to the public.

The new restaurant sits in Capital Enclave Jinnah Garden, and early visitors say the redesigned space is even more impressive than before. With a modern architectural layout and expansive rooftop seating, the restaurant aims to recreate the scenic charm that made Monal a household name in Islamabad.

The reopening has sparked excitement across social media, with many residents sharing photos and celebrating the return of a place that had become a cultural landmark for the city.

The original Monal had closed in August 2024 following orders from the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The court directed that all eateries operating inside Margalla Hills National Park be shut down as part of efforts to protect the park’s natural environment.

For nearly 18 years, the hilltop Monal had been one of Islamabad’s most famous restaurants, known for its panoramic views, diverse menu, and as a go-to spot for family dinners, tourists, and celebrations.

The closure not only saddened loyal visitors but also deeply affected its workforce. More than 700 employees were left facing uncertainty after the shutdown. The court had advised restaurant owners to consider relocating their businesses outside the national park through land leasing. Now, with its new home at IMARAT Downtown, Monal appears ready to begin a new chapter.
