BEIRUT: An Israeli airstrike on Thursday struck the Ramlet al-Bayda seafront area in central Beirut, resulting in the deaths of 12 people and injuring 28 others, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. The targeted site, which had become a shelter for civilians and displaced families fleeing ongoing Israeli bombardments in southern Lebanon, was left devastated by the attack.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of destruction, with damaged vehicles, blood-stained pavement, and a crater marking the impact site. Security forces cordoned off the area, which is typically a bustling part of the city. Many of those affected were displaced individuals who had sought refuge in the area, believing it to be safer than the conflict-ridden south.
The strike comes as Israel has threatened to escalate its military operations in Lebanon and has warned of potential territorial seizures. The death toll in Lebanon from recent hostilities is nearing 700, according to official figures.
In response to the attack, Hezbollah launched what it described as its “biggest barrage” to date, firing 200 rockets towards Israeli positions. The ongoing exchange of fire has heightened tensions along the border and raised concerns about a broader conflict.
The Ramlet al-Bayda area, located near the Lebanese government headquarters, was hit during a period of intensified Israeli airstrikes. The attack specifically targeted a seafront location where civilians, including families displaced from southern Lebanon, had set up tents for shelter.
The aftermath of the strike has drawn condemnation from various quarters, with humanitarian concerns mounting over the safety of civilians and the increasing number of casualties. The situation remains volatile as both sides continue to exchange fire, and the threat of further escalation persists.
