Jerusalem: The Israeli military has announced the cancellation of indictments against five soldiers who had been accused of abusing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention facility near the Gaza Strip, a case that had drawn significant public attention.
According to an official statement released on Thursday, the military advocate general decided to drop the charges "in light of significant developments since the filing of the indictment in the Sde Teiman case." The statement further explained that "procedural difficulties regarding the transfer of information" by Israeli security authorities played a role in the decision to cancel the indictment.
The case originated in July 2024, when the five reservists were alleged to have abused a Palestinian detainee at the high-security Sde Teiman prison. In February 2025, the Israeli military had announced that the soldiers were facing charges for "acting against the detainee with severe violence, including stabbing the detainee’s buttocks with a sharp object, which had penetrated near the detainee’s rectum." The incident reportedly occurred at the detention centre located near the Gaza Strip.
The decision to drop the charges has been welcomed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who praised the move. The case had previously sparked widespread outrage and brought renewed scrutiny to the treatment of Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody.
While the military cited procedural issues as the primary reason for the cancellation, the details of the "significant developments" referenced in the statement were not elaborated upon in the official communication.
The Sde Teiman detention centre has been the subject of attention due to its high-security status and proximity to the Gaza Strip. The allegations and subsequent legal proceedings had drawn both domestic and international concern regarding the conduct of Israeli forces and the conditions faced by Palestinian detainees.
