Tehran – A resident of Tehran in her 30s has shared her experiences of living in the Iranian capital during the ongoing conflict, describing a city marked by uncertainty, economic hardship, and changes to daily routines. For her safety, her identity has been withheld.
Life in Tehran under strain
The resident explained that many people initially left Tehran, particularly those living near potential targets. However, she noted that the number of people leaving has decreased, possibly due to the costs associated with relocating and statements by former US President Donald Trump indicating that civilians would be safe.
She described the financial situation as "very bad," stating, "My job has been halted and I am spending out of my savings." She added that the expense of leaving Tehran is also a factor in people's decisions to stay.
Despite the challenges, some aspects of daily life continue. "You can still do your shopping though," she said. However, fuel rationing has become more stringent. "For petrol, they went from 30 litres maximum to 20. I didn’t take any petrol because I have enough. But I heard from a friend that at one petrol station, they capped it at five litres." She also mentioned that hospitals are reportedly functioning normally, although she has not had to visit one herself.
Security and public services
Discussing the security situation, the resident observed that even small police stations are closed, leaving officers without a place to go. She did not provide further details on how this has affected overall security in the city.
The account offers a glimpse into the challenges faced by ordinary citizens in Tehran as they navigate the uncertainties brought on by conflict, economic difficulties, and changes in public services.
