ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, has strongly refuted allegations made by Indian and Afghan envoys at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) regarding cross-border militancy.
During a recent UNSC session, the Indian and Afghan representatives accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border militant activities. In response, Ambassador Iftikhar stated that these criticisms failed to acknowledge the ongoing terror threats emanating from Afghan territory into Pakistan. He emphasized that Pakistan has consistently been a victim of terrorism originating from its western border.
Ambassador Iftikhar defended Pakistan’s counter-terrorism measures, highlighting the country's efforts to combat militancy and maintain regional stability. He asserted that Pakistan has undertaken significant actions to address security challenges and has made substantial sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.
The Pakistani envoy further pointed out that the statements made by the Indian and Afghan envoys ignored the reality of cross-border attacks faced by Pakistan. He reiterated Pakistan's commitment to working with the international community to address the threat of terrorism in the region.
Ambassador Iftikhar also called for a balanced and objective approach from the international community when addressing regional security issues. He urged the UNSC to recognize the complexities of the situation and to avoid one-sided narratives that overlook Pakistan’s security concerns.
The exchange at the UNSC comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with Pakistan repeatedly raising concerns about cross-border attacks from Afghan soil. The country has also accused India of attempting to deflect attention from its own actions by leveling unfounded allegations against Pakistan.
Pakistan’s statement at the UNSC underscores its position that regional peace and security require a comprehensive and cooperative approach, rather than blame games and selective criticism.
