ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to remove encroachments along the city’s storm drains, or nullahs, in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season. The decision was made during a meeting held on Monday, chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa and attended by board members, the director general of Capital Emergency Services, the director general of environment, and other senior officials.
According to officials, the move aims to ensure the smooth flow of water during the rainy season and prevent a repeat of last year’s urban flooding. In 2023, Islamabad experienced severe flooding in several areas, including Saidpur, the Sohan River, and Nullah Korang. The capital is traversed by multiple nullahs originating from the Margalla Hills, many of which have become congested due to encroachments, particularly by slum dwellers. The right-of-way of the Sohan River and Nullah Korang is also reportedly affected by alleged encroachments.
During the meeting, city managers resolved to map all locations where rainwater accumulated last year, with the intention of taking preemptive action before the onset of the pre-monsoon and monsoon periods. Officials stated that the mapping exercise would help identify critical points and guide the removal of obstructions that impede water flow.
“Learning a lesson from last year,” the CDA has formalised strategies to address the issue, officials said. The effectiveness of these measures will become clear as the rainy season progresses. The CDA’s efforts are focused on both clearing existing encroachments and preventing new ones, particularly in vulnerable areas along the storm drains.
The meeting also discussed coordination between various departments to ensure a timely response to potential flooding incidents. The CDA has emphasised the importance of proactive measures to safeguard residents and infrastructure from the risks associated with heavy rainfall and urban flooding.
Officials highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader plan to improve the city’s resilience to extreme weather events and maintain the integrity of Islamabad’s drainage system. The CDA is expected to begin the removal of encroachments in the coming days, with further updates to be provided as the operation progresses.
