Trump seeks role in Iran leadership as conflict escalates across region

US President Donald Trump has stated his intention to be involved in the selection of Iran’s next supreme leader, following the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a US-Israeli campaign. Trump dismissed the possibility of Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, assuming the role, referring to him as a “lightweight” and insisting, “I have to be involved in the appointment, like with Delcy,” during an interview.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties and widespread destruction in Iran. Reports indicate that 1,230 people have been killed so far due to bombing, with civilian areas, hospitals, schools, and a football stadium among the targets. Iranian officials have accused Israel and the United States of deliberately targeting these locations.

Iran claims to have struck a US aircraft carrier and an oil tanker, as well as targeting the Erbil base. However, US officials have rejected the claim by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that it shot down an F-15E fighter jet.

Missile strikes have also been reported on Israel’s Ben Gurion airport and the Ramat David Airbase. The conflict has led to the designation of the Hormuz Strait, Gulf of Oman, and Persian Gulf as “warlike operations areas.” According to a United Nations agency, approximately 20,000 seafarers and 15,000 passengers are currently stranded in these waters.

The situation remains fluid as the conflict reverberates across the Middle East and beyond, with both sides making conflicting claims regarding military actions and casualties. The international community continues to monitor developments closely as tensions persist.
