Government emphasizes firewall necessity for Pakistan’s cyber defence

The National Assembly was informed on Thursday that the installation of a firewall is considered essential for the protection of Pakistan's digital infrastructure. During a session, Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja addressed questions regarding the government's initiatives to safeguard citizens' digital rights and maintain internet accessibility.

The minister reiterated the government's commitment to defending digital rights, emphasizing the importance of robust cybersecurity measures. She stated that various steps have been taken to enhance the security of the digital space for citizens. According to the minister, further investments are planned to strengthen the country's cyber defences.

In response to concerns raised about the potential impact of firewall installation or modification on internet speeds, the minister maintained that the protection of Pakistan’s digital boundaries could not be compromised. She underscored the necessity of these security measures, even if they might affect internet performance.

Highlighting the effectiveness of the current cybersecurity framework, the minister cited May 2025 as an example, stating that during that period, no institution in Pakistan—whether government, private, civil, or defence—was breached by external threats. She described this as evidence of the firewall's role in safeguarding national digital assets.

The government will continue to prioritize cybersecurity and invest in technologies to protect against potential cyber threats. The minister's remarks indicate an ongoing focus on balancing digital rights, internet access, and national security requirements.
