PMEX Set to Launch Trading in Rice, Maize, and Sugar Futures
The Pakistan Mercantile Exchange will soon launch futures trading in rice, maize, and sugar. Officials say all formalities are complete, with rice trading set for the coming months and sugar to follow next quarter.

The Pakistan Mercantile Exchange (PMEX) is preparing to introduce futures trading in agricultural commodities, with rice, maize, and sugar set to be added to its platform in the coming months. This development was announced by PMEX Chief Executive Khurrum Zafar during a stakeholder gathering in Islamabad on Monday.
According to officials, all necessary formalities for the trading of these agricultural products have been completed. Khurrum Zafar stated, “The trading of rice is scheduled for the coming months, and the sugar will be at the counter from next quarter.” He invited banks and traders from Islamabad and nearby regions to participate in commodities trading on the regulated and modern platform provided by PMEX.
During his address, Zafar emphasized the need to modernize the traditional 125-year-old ‘mandi’ based system, advocating for a shift towards a digital ecosystem. He highlighted the potential positive impact on farmers, noting that many currently face challenges due to price distortion cycles.
Sources indicate that PMEX has already negotiated terms with dealers and sugar mills to facilitate futures trading in sugar. The move is seen as an effort to bring greater transparency and efficiency to agricultural commodity trading in Pakistan.
While PMEX has a history of futures trading in precious metals, this marks its first foray into agricultural products. The exchange aims to provide a regulated environment for trading and investment in these key commodities, with the goal of benefiting stakeholders across the supply chain.
Further details regarding the exact launch dates for rice, maize, and sugar trading are expected to be announced in the near future. Stakeholders have been encouraged to engage with the new trading opportunities as they become available.
