Search continues for 14 missing after five Afghan migrants die in desert heat
Afghan authorities are searching for 14 missing migrants in Nimroz after five others died from thirst and extreme heat while trying to reach Iran. Police said the group’s vehicle broke down in the desert during a storm.
KABUL: Authorities in southwestern Afghanistan were continuing a search on Monday for 14 people missing in a desert area after five other Afghan migrants trying to reach neighbouring Iran died in severe heat, according to police in Nimroz province.
The group had left more than a week earlier from Nimroz, one of Afghanistan’s hottest and driest provinces, where temperatures rise above 45C. Police said the migrants were travelling through Chahar Burjak district when their vehicle ran into trouble.
Nimroz police spokesperson Gul Mohammad Qudrat said the vehicle broke down during a storm and became trapped in dust. He said the driver then tried to head toward inhabited areas to find help or someone who could repair the vehicle, but lost his way in the process.
