Karachi experienced significant disruptions on Monday as the city responded to a call for a 'day of mourning' by the Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen (MWM) following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Reports indicate that transport services were limited throughout the day, with many businesses opting for voluntary closure. The atmosphere in the city was described as tense, with an uneasy calm prevailing amid widespread grief and uncertainty.
Security measures were heightened, particularly around the US consulate, where roads remained closed for additional protection. Several major roads and key arteries across Karachi were also sealed, further affecting the movement of people and vehicles.
In response to the situation, major public and private universities announced a late-night decision to suspend academic activities and keep their institutions closed. This move came alongside an unannounced shutdown of markets by traders, who reportedly stayed away from business activities voluntarily.
Throughout the day, protest demonstrations and sit-ins were organized by the MWM and other groups in various parts of the city, especially after sunset. Condolence meetings were also held as residents gathered to express their grief and solidarity.
Despite the disruptions, some normalcy returned in the evening when people ventured out for routine shopping before Iftar. However, the overall situation remained cautious, with many choosing to limit their activities in light of the prevailing tension.
Business leaders confirmed that the closures were voluntary and not enforced by authorities. The combined effect of the mourning call, heightened security, and public demonstrations contributed to a subdued atmosphere across Karachi throughout the day.
