CCP Calls for Reforms to Boost Competition in Pakistan's Auto Sector

The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has called for comprehensive reforms in the country's automobile industry, emphasizing the need for a more competitive environment to benefit consumers and the national economy. The recommendations were presented in a detailed report titled “The Road to Fair Competition — A Study of Pakistan’s Automobile Industry,” unveiled by the CCP on Monday.

The CCP highlighted that a competitive automobile sector can lead to lower prices, improved product quality, greater consumer choice, and enhanced export opportunities. The commission underscored that the automobile industry is a significant contributor to Pakistan’s economy, accounting for approximately 2.8 percent of the national GDP and providing employment to more than two percent of the workforce.

The report identified several structural and regulatory challenges currently hindering the sector's growth and efficiency. Among the key issues cited were regulatory distortions and barriers that limit competition and innovation within the industry.

To address these challenges, the CCP recommended the formulation of a long-term policy roadmap aimed at fostering a modern, competitive, and globally integrated automobile sector. The commission also suggested improvements in vehicle financing mechanisms and the removal of regulatory obstacles that impede fair competition.

The commission expressed hope that the findings and recommendations of the study would inform policymakers, regulators, and industry stakeholders, supporting the development of a robust and efficient automobile sector in Pakistan.

The CCP’s study is intended to serve as a guiding document for future policy decisions, with the ultimate goal of creating a more dynamic and consumer-friendly automobile market in the country.
