Teen killed in fatal stabbing outside Smethwick mosque as murder probe begins

An 18-year-old British Pakistani teenager has died after being stabbed outside a mosque in Smethwick on Friday evening, prompting a murder investigation by West Midlands Police.

The attack occurred outside Oldbury Jamia Masjid while worshippers were inside offering Taraweeh prayers. The mosque is located in Smethwick, a town neighbouring Birmingham.

The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Zeeshan Afzal, a resident of Smethwick. Two other young men, aged 19 and 22, were also injured in the incident and are being treated in hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The tragedy has left the local community shocked and grieving, particularly as it took place during the holy month of Ramadan. Worshippers described scenes of confusion and distress as they exited the mosque to find a significant police and paramedic presence outside.

Because the stabbing happened in the mosque car park, the area was sealed off as a crime scene. Attendees were asked to return inside and were prevented from leaving for around 40 minutes. When they were eventually allowed to depart, they were told to leave their vehicles behind while investigations began.

Police said officers were alerted to reports of disorder in the car park on Oldbury Road. Upon arrival, they found Zeeshan Afzal with stab wounds. Despite the efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A spokesperson for the force confirmed that a murder investigation is now under way. Officers are working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.

The spokesperson said the force would do everything possible to support the victim’s family during what they described as a devastating time.

While inquiries continue, police have stated that the incident is not currently being treated as racially or religiously motivated. They have appealed to anyone who witnessed the events or has relevant information to come forward.

Officers acknowledged that the killing outside a place of worship would understandably cause concern within the community and assured residents that there will be an increased and visible police presence in the area to provide reassurance.
