LAHORE: Punjab Home Secretary Dr Ahmad Javed Qazi has urged residents of Lahore to act responsibly to help keep Basant 2026 safe, as a growing number of incidents are being reported involving people falling from rooftops while chasing stray kites.
According to the Home Department control room, 118 Basant-related accidents were recorded during the first two days of the festival up to the time of reporting. Six people lost their lives, including four who fell from rooftops, while two young boys were killed in separate incidents after attempting to climb an electric pole and a tree to retrieve kites. A total of 112 people sustained injuries caused by kite string.
In a video message released on Saturday, Dr Qazi said the government was taking comprehensive steps to ensure the three-day festival was observed safely. He noted that police, traffic police, the district administration, Rescue 1122, health services and other relevant departments were fully deployed and actively performing their duties.
He added that all safety measures and protocols were being enforced, including the installation of safety rods on motorcycles, to minimize the risk of serious injuries during the celebrations.
