Has Punjab ended attendance requirement for students?

ISLAMABAD: A notification circulating on social media claims that Punjab’s public and private colleges and universities will no longer enforce attendance requirements for students. The document, dated January 17, 2026, allegedly instructs institutions not to block students from admissions or exams due to low attendance and prohibits attendance-related fines or penalties.

The notification also threatens strict legal and administrative action for non-compliance, and is purportedly signed by a Section Officer named Babar Khan Gondal.

However, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has responded to the widespread circulation of this document, urging the public to be cautious. The HEC confirmed that the notification is fake and warned students, faculty, and institutions to avoid spreading unverified information.

The commission advised everyone to refer only to official government websites and verified social media pages for authentic updates.
