LAHORE: The Punjab Counter Narcotics Force on Sunday foiled a major drug-smuggling attempt on the M-1 Motorway, recovering more than one tonne of narcotics concealed inside an oil tanker during a targeted operation, officials said.
Acting on intelligence information, CNF personnel intercepted the tanker near the Burhan Rest Area and conducted a thorough search, which led to the recovery of 1,140 kilograms of drugs with an estimated market value of around Rs 90 million.
According to the CNF, the seized consignment included 860 kilograms of weed or charas and 280 kilograms of opium. Preliminary investigations indicated that the narcotics were being transported for distribution to several cities in Punjab, including Lahore, Sheikhupura, Multan and Faisalabad.
The suspect involved in the smuggling attempt was arrested at the scene, and a case was registered under the Punjab Control of Narcotic Substances Act 2025. Authorities said further investigation was under way to trace the network behind the operation.
In a statement, the Punjab Counter Narcotics Force reaffirmed its commitment to continue decisive action against drug traffickers, in line with the provincial government’s policy of a drug-free and safe Punjab.
Officials said operations against narcotics smuggling would be intensified to dismantle organised drug networks and protect younger generations from the impact of illegal drugs.
