LAHORE: The Emergency Services Department (ESD) responded to 1,160 Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) across all 37 districts of Punjab during the last 24 hours, leaving 16 people dead and 1,345 injured.
According to official data, Rescue Medical Teams shifted 621 seriously injured victims to hospitals, while 724 people with minor injuries were treated on the spot, significantly reducing the burden on emergency wards.
Motorbikes continued to dominate the crash statistics, accounting for 74 per cent of total accidents, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved lane discipline to curb the rising number of road incidents.
The analysis further revealed that 779 drivers, 51 underage drivers, 144 pedestrians and 438 passengers were among those affected in these crashes.
Lahore once again topped the provincial list, with 204 RTCs reported in the city, affecting 237 persons. Faisalabad ranked second with 91 accidents and 107 victims, followed by Multan with 78 crashes injuring 85 people.
In total, 1,361 victims were affected across Punjab, including 1,111 males and 250 females. Age-wise breakdown showed that 288 victims were under 18 years, 679 were between 18 and 40 years, while 394 were above 40 years of age.
Vehicle involvement data showed that 1,208 motorbikes, 82 auto-rickshaws, 136 motorcars, 32 vans, 15 passenger buses, 38 trucks and 130 other types of vehicles and slow-moving carts were involved in the reported road crashes.
The figures underline the growing road safety crisis in Punjab, particularly the alarming vulnerability of motorbike riders and young drivers.
