15 dead, 1,822 injured as Punjab records 1,579 road crashes in 24 hours

  • Motorbikes involved in 75% of all reported accidents with Lahore tops list with 269 crashes, 316 victims

LAHORE: Punjab continued to grapple with an alarming surge in road traffic incidents as the Emergency Services Department (ESD) responded to 1,579 road traffic crashes (RTCs) across all 37 districts in the past 24 hours, leaving 15 people dead and 1,822 injured. The scale of the casualties—with hundreds requiring hospitalization—once again underscored the province’s persistent road-safety crisis.

According to ESD data, 826 seriously injured victims were shifted to various hospitals, while 996 people with minor injuries received on-site medical assistance from Rescue teams, significantly reducing the burden on healthcare facilities.

Officials noted that motorbikes accounted for 75% of all crashes, a trend they said reinforces the need for strict enforcement of traffic laws and lane discipline to curb the rising number of RTCs.

The analysis further revealed that among the victims were 1,022 drivers, 90 underage drivers, 186 pedestrians, and 629 passengers. Lahore once again topped the provincial list with 269 crashes affecting 316 people, followed by Faisalabad with 95 crashes and 107 victims and Multan with 81 crashes and 97 victims.

In total, 1,837 victims were affected—including 1,473 males and 364 females. Age-wise, 318 victims were under 18, 1,004 were between 18 and 40, while 515 were above 40.

Vehicle data showed that 1,613 motorbikes, 103 auto-rickshaws, 183 cars, 35 vans, 17 passenger buses, 35 trucks, and 173 other vehicles or slow-moving carts were involved in accidents during the 24-hour period.
