Nordic diplomats have firmly rejected US President Donald Trump’s claims that Chinese and Russian vessels are operating near Greenland, according to a report from the Financial Times.
The diplomats, who had access to NATO intelligence briefings, stated that there have been no sightings of Russian or Chinese ships or submarines around Greenland in recent years. One senior diplomat emphasized that the intelligence data clearly showed no such presence.
Trump has repeatedly suggested that Russian and Chinese ships are active in the waters around Greenland, a claim that Denmark disputes. He has provided no evidence to support these allegations.
Earlier this week, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen refuted Trump’s claims, stating that the idea of Russian and Chinese ships operating near Greenland was incorrect. Rasmussen also dismissed rumors of large Chinese investments in the region.
Vessel tracking data from MarineTraffic and LSEG show no evidence of Russian or Chinese vessels near Greenland. Greenland’s local assembly, in response to the growing tensions, announced they would bring forward a meeting to discuss how to handle US threats over the island.
Trump has also voiced his opinion that the United States must own Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, to prevent Russian or Chinese influence in the strategically important and mineral-rich area. This latest development is concerning for many of Greenland’s 57,000 residents, many of whom hope to eventually achieve independence.
