ISLAMABAD: Wildlife officials have confirmed the presence of a leopard inside the premises of the International Islamic University, prompting the administration to shut down campus units as a search operation continues.
According to a university spokesperson, the animal was first seen concealed in bushes within the campus, causing alarm among students and staff. The administration immediately closed all units and contacted the relevant authorities, seeking assistance from the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board and local police.
Wildlife teams reached the campus shortly after and began a coordinated search. Officials confirmed signs indicating the leopard is still present within the university grounds. Traps have been set and patrols intensified as a precaution, while coordination continues among concerned departments.
The wildlife board urged students, staff and the public to remain calm, avoid spreading rumours and cooperate with officials during the operation. It said there was no immediate cause for panic and assured that teams were fully vigilant.
Sources said an initial inquiry suggests the leopard may have entered the campus through the Sector E-9 drain, possibly moving from F-9 Park. Wildlife officials noted that leopards generally avoid humans unless provoked and do not pose a threat if left undisturbed.
Officials also explained that leopards are native to the nearby Margalla Hills National Park and are highly adaptable animals. Studies show their home range can extend up to 20 to 30 square kilometres, making occasional movement into adjacent urban areas possible, especially at night.
The university said the campus will remain closed until the animal is safely captured and relocated. The administration added that it is working closely with wildlife authorities to ensure the leopard’s removal without harm and the safety of the university community.
