LAHORE: Punjab has introduced a revised traffic law under the Provincial Motor Vehicle Ordinance (Fourth Amendment) 2025, imposing significantly higher fines and stricter penalties for various traffic violations.
The new ordinance, which came into effect on December 1, sets fines ranging from Rs2,000 to Rs200,000, a significant increase from the previous law, which imposed fines between Rs200 and Rs5,000. The revisions also criminalize several violations, including overspeeding, traffic signal violations, and overloading.
A notable change is the introduction of jail terms for specific offenses. For instance, individuals caught performing dangerous stunts, such as one-wheeling on a motorcycle, can face up to six months in prison or a fine of Rs5,000. Repeat offenders may face up to two years in jail or a fine of Rs10,000.
Furthermore, the ordinance mandates that anyone who sells or alters a vehicle in violation of the new rules can be punished with imprisonment for up to two years, a fine up to Rs200,000, or both.
Waqas Nazir, Deputy Inspector General of Traffic Police Punjab, confirmed the updated fines, which were officially announced on November 25. The new law aims to reduce traffic violations and promote road safety in the province.
