Wahaj Ali’s latest television project, Jinn Ki Shadi Unn Ki Shadi, a horror-comedy currently airing, marks a departure from the intense, dramatic roles he is best known for. In the series, Ali plays Ali, a failed actor with a big heart, whose determination drives the plot. The show stands out in a television landscape where genre experimentation is rare.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Ali explained his decision to take on a project outside of his typical romantic-dramatic roles. “It’s not about whether a project is from a big banner or not,” he said. “After Tere Bin, everyone expected me to stick to big projects. But this drama was my choice. My strength has always been in playing different, performance-driven characters. I don’t want to be limited to just one type of role or one kind of story.”
The 36-year-old actor, with nearly a decade of television experience, shared his desire for scripts that offer both variety and depth. “I love this craft and want to keep exploring and learning. I also really enjoy doing comedy. People have seen me in serious roles, and I wanted to offer them something fresh,” he added.
Jinn Ki Shadi Unn Ki Shadi, written by Saima Akram Chaudhry and directed by Ali Faizan, blends fantasy, humor, and social satire. The show airs on HUM TV and features an ensemble cast, including Romaisa Khan, Sehar Khan, and Arslan Naseer.
Ali’s remarks come at a time when many leading television actors have expressed frustration over the lack of script diversity in Pakistan’s mainstream industry. His choice of a horror-comedy—a genre rarely explored on local television—represents a push to expand storytelling options beyond the usual formulaic romance and tragedy.
