Interior minister briefs PM Shehbaz on national security, Islamabad projects

  • Naqvi updates the prime minister on the latest law and order situation nationwide
  • PM directs continuation of coordinated actions to safeguard citizens’ lives, property

LAHORE: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi briefed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday on the country’s overall law and order situation and ongoing development projects in Islamabad, as the government reviews internal security amid recent counterterrorism operations and protests, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The meeting comes a week after the premier and the interior minister last met ahead of a police operation to dismantle the protest camp of the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) in Muridke. The TLP had announced plans to march on Islamabad and stage a demonstration outside the US embassy “in solidarity with Gaza.”

During Sunday’s meeting, Minister Naqvi updated the prime minister on the latest law and order situation nationwide. The premier appreciated the efforts of the Ministry of Interior and law enforcement agencies, directing that coordinated and effective actions continue to ensure the safety of citizens’ lives and property.

Reaffirming the government’s resolve, Prime Minister Shehbaz said protecting people’s lives, upholding the rule of law, and eradicating terrorism remained top priorities for his administration.

Earlier in the day, Naqvi met Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi in Lahore to review counterterrorism operations across various districts of KP, the situation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, and ongoing efforts to restore durable peace and stability in the region.

The two leaders paid rich tribute to the security forces and police personnel engaged in anti-terror operations against Indian-backed militant groups. They expressed deep grief over the martyrdom of officers and troops in recent attacks on the Police Training Centre and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) office in Dera Ismail Khan, vowing that their sacrifices would not go in vain.

Governor Kundi emphasized that the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were peace-loving and resilient, adding that lasting stability was essential for the province’s development.

Interior Minister Naqvi reaffirmed the federal government’s full support to provincial authorities and security agencies in their operations, asserting that Pakistan’s law enforcement and intelligence institutions were working “in close coordination to neutralize every threat to national security.”

Meanwhile, the Punjab Police said it remained on high alert during Christian worship services across the province, with additional forces, snipers, and patrol teams deployed at sensitive churches and religious sites.
