Punjab launches its first e-taxi scheme

The Punjab government has launched its inaugural e-taxi scheme aimed at promoting green transport and creating job opportunities. The first phase will see 1,100 electric vehicles distributed, with 1,000 going to the corporate sector and 100 allocated to individual applicants. Additionally, 30 e-taxis are reserved exclusively for women.

Applications for the program can be submitted online at e-taxi.punjab.gov.pk. The vehicles will be provided through a five-year interest-free instalment plan, with the government covering all interest costs.

Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan emphasized that the scheme would encourage the use of electric vehicles, contributing to environmentally friendly transportation. The initiative follows the recent launch of electric buses in Punjab, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announcing the start of 15 electric buses operating on various routes. The project also includes the installation of charging units at terminals and plans for further expansion across the province.

In April, the Chief Minister approved a province-wide electric bus project, which will deploy 1,500 buses across multiple cities.
