Sindh govt to launch Pakistan’s first EV taxi service

KARACHI: The Sindh government is set to introduce Pakistan’s first government-operated electric vehicle (EV) taxi service by December. The initiative, aimed at providing eco-friendly and affordable transportation in urban areas, will initially launch in Karachi.

According to officials, the decision was finalized in a meeting led by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who oversees both the information and transport departments. Memon highlighted that the EV taxi service aligns with Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s vision for modern, sustainable, and safe public transport.

In the initial phase, part of the fleet will be dedicated to serving female passengers, continuing the government’s emphasis on gender-sensitive mobility options. This follows the earlier introduction of initiatives like the Pink Bus Service and the Pink Scooty scheme for women.

Transport department officials also noted that the EV taxi project is part of a broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions, lessen reliance on conventional fuels, and offer safer public transport options for citizens.
