PESHAWAR/BUNER: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Sunday reaffirmed his government’s resolve to rebuild all destroyed homes in flood-affected areas and announced Rs2 million compensation for each.
Addressing a press conference in Peshawar on Sunday, he reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting flood victims, saying the residents from flood-affected areas will be relocated to safer locations.
The chief minister said that the prime minister and federal ministers have contacted him over the phone and offered assistance, adding, “We fully expect the federation to play its part.”
Addressing the issue of encroachments, the CM stated that the problem has existed for years and warned that no leniency will be shown to anyone involved. “A model anti-encroachment operation was conducted in Dera Ismail Khan, and we will replicate the same across the province,” he said.
Gandapur urged citizens to refrain from illegal land grabs and cooperate with the government. He added that the Buner district suffered the most damage due to the recent floods. He said that the provincial government has ample resources to rescue the affected people.
Gandapur said that PTI’s MNAs and MPAs are visiting the affected areas to help the people. He also announced that the KP will acquire modern technology to monitor cloudbursts and enhance early warning systems.
“The military is also assisting us and has provided two additional helicopters to support rescue efforts,” CM said.
Rs2m compensation for each flood victim’s family
Earlier, KP CM Ali Amin Gandapur visited the flood-ravaged district of Buner, one of the hardest-hit areas in the province, to assess the devastation and announce relief measures.
Accompanied by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Barrister Gohar and MNA Sher Afzal Marwat, the Chief Minister declared a compensation of Rs2m each for the families of those who lost their lives in the catastrophic floods.
During his visit, Chief Minister Gandapur reviewed the extensive damage caused by the floods and monitored ongoing relief operations.
He was briefed by the divisional and district administrations on the loss of life, property damage, and the progress of relief efforts.
The Chief Minister also met with affected families, offering condolences and assurances of government support. Provincial cabinet members, the Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and other relevant officials were present during the visit.
The floods, triggered by torrential rains and cloudbursts, have claimed 340 lives in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to official reports.
The NDMA has warned of more moderate to heavy rainfall expected across the province, including in flood-affected areas such as Chitral, Dir, Haripur, Karak, Kohat, Kohistan, Khyber, Kurram, Mansehra, Mohmand, Nowshera, Malakand, Charsadda, Abbottabad, Bannu, Buner, Hazara, Peshawar, Swabi, Swat, Waziristan, and surrounding regions, from August 18 to August 22.
The provincial government has pledged to intensify relief efforts to support the affected communities as the region braces for further rainfall.
