NA secretariat denies involvement in speaker’s salary hike

ISLAMABAD: The spokesperson for the National Assembly Secretariat clarified on Thursday that neither the speaker’s office nor the Secretariat played any role in the recent increase in the salary of the Speaker.

In a move that has raised questions, the government approved a more than fivefold increase in the salaries of the Senate chairman and National Assembly speaker, bringing their monthly salaries to Rs1.3 million. This increase, which also includes a sumptuary allowance of 50% of the revised salary (Rs650,000), was made effective from January 2025.

The spokesperson explained that the summary for the salary hike was prepared by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and later forwarded to the federal cabinet for approval.
