Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin Split After 8 Years, Ending Engagement Rumors

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have officially ended their nearly eight-year relationship, with sources confirming the breakup to PEOPLE on Wednesday. According to one insider, “It feels final this time,” signaling the end of their on-and-off romance, which had long remained largely private.

The couple, known for their low-key approach to their relationship, rarely shared details with the public and never made joint red carpet appearances. Their quiet life only fueled speculation, including whispers of a secret engagement. While engagement rumors had surfaced over the years, particularly in March 2024 when an insider claimed they had been engaged for six years, neither Johnson nor Martin ever confirmed such claims.

Breakup rumors had swirled intermittently throughout 2024, though their representatives denied the speculation in August, affirming they were “happily together.” Their last public moments together took place just last month, when they were spotted enjoying a private yoga session in Malibu on May 16. Three days later, Johnson attended the Cannes Film Festival solo, appearing at the premiere of Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest on May 19.

Since they began dating in 2017, Johnson and Martin had consistently kept their relationship out of the limelight, opting for a more private life away from the tabloids. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Martin acknowledged the importance of romantic love but chose not to discuss the rumors surrounding their relationship. “It is important to say that [romantic love] is such a big factor in everything, even though it feels right to keep it precious and private,” he said.

Now, both stars are moving forward with their respective careers. Johnson is focused on promoting two upcoming films: Splitsville and Materialists, the latter of which stars Pedro Pascal and is slated for release in June 2025. Martin, on the other hand, is deep into Coldplay’s sold-out world tour, with the next show scheduled for Friday in Las Vegas. The tour will continue through September, concluding with a final performance in London.
