ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will observe Youm-e-Takbeer on May 28 to commemorate its achievement as a nuclear power since 1998, while emphasizing the peaceful applications of nuclear technology for development in health, energy, and agriculture.
The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) leads efforts in applying nuclear science to improve public welfare. Its network of 20 cancer hospitals nationwide offers advanced diagnostic and treatment services.
Equipped with technologies like linear accelerators and PET scanners, these facilities serve around 80% of Pakistan’s cancer patients. The NORI Cancer Hospital in Islamabad features Cyber Knife technology, a non-invasive robotic radiosurgery system.
In energy, Pakistan operates six nuclear power plants that provide clean, reliable electricity. Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-1 recently set a national record by running continuously for 400 days. The upcoming Chashma Unit-5, under development, will generate 1,200 MW, becoming the country’s largest nuclear facility.
PAEC’s research institutes also contribute to agriculture by developing disease-resistant and high-yield crops. The Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology (NIAB) in Faisalabad is pioneering coloured cotton, a sustainable alternative for textiles, and serves as an IAEA Collaborating Centre for advanced agricultural research.
As Pakistan celebrates Youm-e-Takbeer, it reiterates its commitment to harnessing nuclear technology for peace and progress across multiple sectors.
