Royal biographer Andrew Morton has suggested a new perspective on what triggered Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to leave the UK and step back from royal duties.
In his book Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, Morton claims that a powerful image of Queen Elizabeth II alongside then-Prince Charles, Prince William, and young Prince George symbolized the unshakable future of the monarchy — a future that seemed to exclude the Sussexes.
“The royal couple suspected that the entire institution was conspiring against them. As they saw it, the evidence was all around them,” Morton explained. He added, “The unspoken code was straightforward: the future of the monarchy was assured, with or without Meghan and Harry.”
The much-publicized departure, often called ‘Megxit,’ unfolded in 2020. The Sussexes initially relocated to Canada with their son, Prince Archie, before moving to Tyler Perry’s mansion in Beverly Hills during their transition.

After several months, they settled into their own $14.65 million, 16-bedroom mansion in California. In June 2021, they welcomed their daughter, Princess Lilibet — their “rainbow baby,” a term denoting a child born after a miscarriage — at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
This insight sheds light on the deep-rooted family dynamics and pressures that may have influenced their royal exit, centered around the powerful symbolism represented by the next generation of royals.
