President, PM congratulate Joe Biden on US election victory

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan has felicitated Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris on winning the US presidential election and said Islamabad was looking forward to working with Washington “for peace in Afghanistan” and the region.

President Arif Alvi congratulated the two on their electoral win and said that Pakistan was hoping for a “dignified relationship” with the US.

“Looking forward to an improving US role toward world peace specially in Afghanistan, as well as the entire region. Pakistan looks forward to our continued long term friendship and a dignified relationship,” he tweeted around midnight.

“Look forward to President Elect Biden’s Global Summit on Democracy & working with him to end illegal tax havens and stealth of nation’s wealth by corrupt [leaders]. We will also continue to work with US for peace in Afghanistan & in the region,” the prime minister tweeted late Saturday night.

Democrat Biden defeated President Donald Trump to become the 46th president of the United States on Saturday. He crossed the winning threshold of 270 Electoral College votes with a win in Pennsylvania. His victory came after more than three days of uncertainty as election officials sorted through a surge of mail-in votes that delayed processing.

Harris, his running mate, has made history as the first woman, the first Black person, and the first person of South Asian descent to become US Vice President.

The relationship between Islamabad and Washington has witnessed a positive trajectory in recent years, with both the countries actively contributing toward Pakistan-brokered peace-building efforts in Afghanistan.
