PESHAWAR: Delays in the delivery of justice, societal attitudes and being confined to homes during lockdown due to Covid-19 have led to a decline in reporting of crimes against women in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
During the first five months of this year, the number of complaints of harassment against women dropped from 4.8 to 4.2 per cent per month, while the rate of domestic violence case fell from 29.6 to 24.6. KP had reported 243 cases of crimes against women in the first five months of this year, with the highest number of 113 women killed. Of these, 17 women were killed in name of honour and 21 women were victims of attempted murder, while six women were killed as a result of domestic violence.
According to the report of KP Home Department, 80 women have been sexually assaulted in the province from January 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. Similarly, 15 women have reported physical harassment and 6 have reported sexual harassment.
Reportedly, 96 women have been killed while 17 women have been put to death in the name of honour. Attempts have been made to kill 21 women in five months while cases of domestic violence against six women have come to light. A total of 243 cases have been reported from across the province in the last five months.
The KP Home Department added that 47 women were killed in the first 10 months of 2019 in the name of honour, while in the first five months of this year, the number has risen to 17, which is to say the reporting rate has reduced from 4.7 to 3.4.
Comparing the crime rate against women with the previous year, 587 cases were registered in the first 10 months of 2019, which is 243 in the first five months of this year.
