Govt warns against using chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19

LAHORE: The Punjab Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education (SHME) department has warned against using chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine as preventive medicines for Covid-19.

The department issued a notification here on Tuesday stating, “The Corona Experts Advisory Group (CEAG) in its meeting held on March 24 deliberated the opinion of using chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine for prophylaxis of Covid-19 based on the currently available evidence. The committee is of the opinion that there is insufficient scientific evidence to advise that these medicines work for the prevention of Covid-19 disease at the moment. The committee warned that there can be serious side effects/untoward reactions of unsupervised usage of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine”.

It is pertinent to mention here that the above mentioned medicines have been found to be efficient on SARS-CoV-2, and reported to be efficient in COV-19 patients in foreign media.

The medicines have now gone short in medical stores and pharmacies.
