ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan will address a rally in Muzaffarabad today to reaffirm Pakistan’s support of occupied Kashmir that has been under lockdown for more than 40 days now.
Prime Minister Imran had announced the public gathering on Wednesday, a day after Pakistan urged the international community “not to remain indifferent to the unfolding tragedy” at the ongoing session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva.
In a Twitter post, the premier had written that a “big jalsa” was in order to “send a message to the world about the continuing siege of [Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir] IoJK by Indian Occupation forces; [and] to show the Kashmiris that Pakistan stands resolutely with them”.
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, in his speech at the UNHRC on Tuesday, had inculpated India with turning the held Kashmir into the “planet’s largest prison” and sought an international investigation by the UN body into the situation in the disputed region.
He also asked the UN human right body to ensure that India ends the clampdown in the valley and restores fundamental rights and liberties in the region after the revocation of its special status on Aug 5.
Since India unilaterally decided to annex occupied Kashmir on Aug 5 and enforce a lockdown, Prime Minister Imran has repeatedly raised concerns about the situation in the disputed valley.
Earlier, the premier had also announced that an event would be held every week to show solidarity with the Kashmiri people, starting from August 30, when Pakistanis came out in droves to observe ‘Kashmir Hour’ from 12 pm to 12:30 pm to express solidarity with Kashmiris in occupied Kashmir.
